Launched in 1918, this 125-meter-long cargo ship was used at the end of World War I to transport horses and goods from New York (USA) to Brest (France). Commissioned by the US Army for World War II, it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on January 11, 1942, off the coast of Lombok while en route to the Philippines. With too much water damage, it ran aground on Tulamben Beach and was unloaded of its cargo of railway equipment and rubber. In 1963, Mount Agung erupted and the resulting seismic tremors caused it to slide from the beach into the sea. The wreck is now submerged at a depth of between 4 and 28 meters and has become home to a rich variety of aquatic life.
